The new Bus Center Glattal in Bassersdorf is the largest bus depot in the canton of Zurich – a highly complex and forward-looking infrastructure for public transport. The building extends over a total of five floors and houses a two-storey bus depot for up to 180 vehicles, training and recreation rooms, office space, a caretaker's flat and a roof car park with 200 parking spaces. Also integrated are: Car wash facilities, a modern petrol station and numerous operational facilities.
For this project, Peikko supplied high-performance ATLANT® composite columns and DELTABEAM® composite beams, which enabled a slim and load-bearing construction method. Thanks to the prefabricated components, the construction time of just 13 months could be adhered to. DELTABEAM® enabled slim floor structures, which saved valuable room height and simplified the installation of the building services.
A particular structural challenge was posed by the construction on pressing groundwater in a protection zone and the combination of different uses under one roof. The large spans in the building of up to 17.5 metres made possible by DELTABEAM® are particularly noteworthy. They enable column-free, flexible room design and optimum utilisation of the space. This design freedom was a clear advantage of the chosen system.
The Bus Center Glattal is an impressive example of modern construction in the field of tension between functionality and economy.
